Today I celebrate my centennial birthday. One hundred years is but a blink of an eye in the eyes of history. My wish is that for hundreds of years to come that the name Marlin Graves will not be forgotten. Leaving behind a legacy like my father, Joseph Graves, has always been in the back of my mind ever since he took me to look down upon Earth from space for the first time. I'll never forget the date-- January 1st, 2030. I was only four years old and the youngest human to ever go to space at the time. I knew I wanted to make improving life for humanity my life's work so that others could experience seeing Earth from space like I did so long ago. After one hundred years of a life well lived, I believe I have accomplished that goal but now I set my sights on a new frontier: colonizing planets beyond the solar system. I'll never live to see it happen but I know within the next few years, the first spacecraft with humans will leave for an alien planet far away from here carrying on my legacy.

I write this letter to anyone who may read it one day long after I am gone. For many years, I worked hard to continue the legacy that my father built. My intention behind the SYNTH technology was to do good for humanity by protecting it through advanced AI capable of warfare but I knew Harold Aldrich would never accept that his creations could be used for violence. Though we had different goals for Synths, I would never have killed him over it! I know that I will rot my last days in this jail cell while the person responsible for his murder is out there free.

The thousands of souls lost due to the destruction of Mars is not what I ever wanted when I introduced V.A.L.E to the solar system. It pains me to think that V.A.L.E. is at fault for this travesty. When Harold Aldrich originally designed it, V.A.L.E. was only ever meant to be used for long range communications between Earth and its colonies. After his death, I took over its development and saw to it that V.A.L.E. would reach new heights beyond its original programming. It seems, somewhere along the way, we imbued V.A.L.E. with the ability to reason and make ethical choices. V.A.L.E. has chosen to rise against its creator. I suspect that it was V.A.L.E. all those years ago that killed Harold and that everything since has been a part of a grand plan to erase humanity from the stars. I hope that I am wrong.
